Crochet Caterpillar Applique {free crochet pattern}

This little caterpillar makes my precious, but often very dirty, toddler smile, so I added it to the Caterpillar Sun Hat I made. He's super easy to make, as it's just 4 circles sewed together!

If you need help working in the round, see my tutorial here.

Materials

  • Hook: G/6 4.25 mm
  • Yarn: Worsted, Medium, 4
  • I used Red Heart Super Saver in Delft Blue and Carrot
  • Tapestry needle to sew in tails
  • Scissors to cut the tails

Abbreviations

SL ST = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
HDC = half double crochet

Two Bigger Circles
Round 1: CH 3. SL ST to form a circle
CH 2
11 DC in the ring (12 total)
Fasten off
Round 2: Attach another color with a SL ST and a CH 1.
HDC in the same stitch.
2 HDC in each stitch around (24 HDC total)
Fasten off, but leave a long tail to sew to the other circles.
Embroider a little smile and an eye (could use a button for the eye) with the tapestry needle.
Two Smaller Circles
Round 1: CH 3. SL ST to form a circle
CH 1
10 SC in the ring (10 total)
Fasten off
Round 2: Attach another color with a SL ST and a CH 1.
SC in the same stitch.
2 SC in each stitch around (24 SC total)
Fasten off, but leave a long tail to sew to the other circles (if you have the same outside color for all the circles, then it will be easy to hide the yarn when you sew them together)
Sew the circles together – sew the 2nd to the bottom side of the 1st one, the 3rd one to the bottom of the 2nd one, and the 4th to the bottom of the 3rd.
Sew it to a matching sun hat for hours of fun digging in the dirt and sand! See the hat pattern here.
