Free Crochet Pattern for a Baby Blanket – Cluster V-Stitch

A crochet beginner can use this free crochet baby blanket pattern using the cluster v-stitch to make a beautiful baby blanket! I know a beginner can do it because it was the first thing I ever crocheted. And despite my total lack of experience and knowledge, it came out beautifully.

I used this amazing quilt, made by one of my mom's friends, as inspiration for the colors.

Made After a Car Accident while on Bed Rest

I made this crochet baby blanket when I was eight months pregnant with our precious little Grayson. I was in a car accident where a lady pulled out in front of me and I hit her head on, totaling my car and sending us both to the hospital. It could've been very bad, but I came out with minor cuts and bruises and doctor's orders for bed rest. My mom moved in for two months to take care of Gabriel, and I crocheted my heart out, including Grayson's baby blanket. It's made with a simple cluster v-stitch but what makes it so appealing are the color stripes. If I could make this as a total crochet newbie, you can, too!

Grayson Still Loves this Crochet Baby Blanket

Grayson, who's now 15 months old, is crazy about this blanket and won't go anywhere without it. The pictures show the signs of love wear and tear, but it's still hanging on.

Update – Grayson is now 9 years old and STILL uses and sleeps with this blanket and loves it to this day.

Crochet Cluster V-Stitch Baby Blanket - Summer Sky

Before we get started on the free crochet baby blanket pattern, I have a cluster v-stitch tutorial for you in case you've never worked with that stitch before. As for the yarn, because I didn't know what I was doing, I used all different brands and weights (some worsted, some baby weight) but I fixed the uneven sides by crocheting a rippled border. I know better now, but if all you have is different everything, you can redeem the blanket with a rippled border as well!

written and designed by Sara from My Merry Messy Life

Finished Size: Approx. 36 inches square (this will different depending on your gauge). This is plenty big enough for a baby and toddler, so you could even make it smaller and it would still be a good size.

Hook: H 5mm

Yarn: Worsted Weight or Baby Sport Weight (if you use this, your blanket will be smaller than mine and you should use a smaller hook – G. But, it'll be super soft!)

Abbreviations

  • CH = chain
  • DC = double crochet
  • YO = yarn over
  • SP = space

{YO and insert hook into ch and pull up a loop (3 loops remain). YO and pull yarn through the first 2 loops (2 loops remain). YO and insert hook into the same ch sp again and pull up a loop (4 loops remain). YO and pull through the first 2 loops (3 loops remain). YO and pull through the last 3 loops}. CH 2 and repeat the text in the brackets into the same space.

Row 1

  • CH 90
  • In the 5th CH from the hook (not counting the ch on your hook) work a cluster v-stitch
  • *Skip 2 CH
  • Work another cluster v-stitch*
  • Repeat from * the length of the chain (with 90 stitches, you'll have 28 v's)
  • After you finish the last cluster v, you should have 1 CH left. Work a DC in that CH.

Row 2

  • CH 3
  • Work 1 cluster v-stitch in each ch 2 space of the cluster v-stitch below.
  • At the end of your work, work a DC on the beginning ch 5.
  • Repeat row 2 for the remainder of your project. I did 28 rows so the blanket is nearly square.

For the ruffled edge, I took a variegated yarn that included the same solid colors I had in the blanket and worked 2 to 3 double crochets in each space, working 4 double crochets in the corners. This part you may want to eyeball because your gauge may be different than mine.

This edging does a great job in removing any imperfections in the blanket, like uneven sides!

Merry Crocheting!

I just viewed your tutorial link and your blanket pattern.
Just curious why there is no ch2 in your pattern like the tutorial.
    Much love,
