Crochet Lacy Star Applique – Free Pattern!

I've written another star applique pattern for you, very similar to the crochet mini star, but this one has loops that makes it more lacy and interesting. I'm using both of them to make a baby mobile for our newest little addition! I think they'd also be super cute for a garland. I love how these stars can be made for either gender, by just changing the colors. This one also comes with a full, step-by-step, photo tutorial!

Free Pattern for a Crochet Lacy Star

These stars use very little yarn and are great stash busters. Not only are they really cute and versatile, they can be made in about five minutes. Imagine how many you could make in an evening and piece together for a gorgeous project?! EEK! I love easy, quick projects – helps me feel accomplished. So, let's get started! This pattern is inspired by a Star Blanket by Bernat, but changed up a bit to suit my purposes. These stars can be made as big as you want by just adding more rounds!

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn, I used acrylic, but any will do
  • Hook: H/8, 5 mm (I used a smaller hook than recommended for worsted weight because I want them to be tight and strong for a baby mobile or garland)

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sp = space

The Pattern

Written by Sara of My Merry Messy Life, copyright  Â©2013. Please see my terms of use for using my crochet patterns.

Finished size is just under 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall, depending on the yarn used.

  • CH 4
  • SL ST to form a ring

Round 1

  • CH 6 (counts as first dc)
  • *1 dc, ch 3* repeat 4 times so there are 5 spokes, including the first CH 6
  • Sl st to the 3rd ch of the ch 6 to join

Round 2

  • Sl st into the first spoke space
  • Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
  • 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp as the ch 3 (if you'd like a bigger hole, ch 3 instead of 2)
  • In the remaining 4 spoke spaces, work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  • Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3

Round 3

(change colors here if you like)

(You can really start anywhere in the star you'd like, but I chose to start right next to where I finished).

  • Attach with a sl st or a standing double crochet into one of the dc spaces (this pattern is starting at the beginning of a spoke space)
  • Dc in the next sp
  • *{In the ch 2 sp} work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  • 1 dc in each of the next 2 sp's
  • Skip the next 2 dc's (only 1 sp)
  • Repeat from * 4 more times
  • Sl st to the top of the dc or ch 3 to finish.
  • Stop here or continue adding rounds by doing the repeated part in the chain spaces and adding 1 dc on either side of the star points.
