Sweet Pea Crochet Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern

A free crochet pattern for a sweet, feminine hat that suits a girl of any age.

Free Crochet Pattern for a Sweet Pea Beanie via My Merry Messy Life

This is another hat I've made for our family friend who is battling cancer and wants some happy hats to keep her spirits up. See the other crochet beanie here (also free crochet pattern), done with the woven stitch and some scrumptious yarn with a fun crochet flower. This one is a new stitch on the blog – the iced shell stitch. I learned it from my favorite crochet book, “Crochet Stitches Visual Encyclopedia.”

It is such a pretty stitch and I plan to also make this hat for my little niece-to-be, so check back for a newborn size. Although, all you have to do is change the width of the crown, using my Hat Measurements for Crochet and Knit post and length of the sides and you can make this hat any size you want! You will need your last round of the crown to have a multiple of 3.

The Sides – Iced Shell Stitch

Adult: Round 7, Newborn – Round 6, Preemie – Round 5

  • Work a standing SC where you just work a SC in the space
  • CH 3 and skip 2 spaces (or 3 DC's, however it's easier for you to understand)
  • *SC in next space
  • CH 3 and skip 2 spaces (or 3 DC's, however it's easier for you to understand)
  • Repeat from * all the way around
  • Join with a SL ST to the CH 1

Adult: Round 8, Newborn – Round 7, Preemie – Round 6 (shell round)

  • CH 3 (counts as first DC)
  • 2 DC in same SC space (so it looks like 3 DC's in the same space)
  • SC on the CH 3
  • *3 DC in next SC
  • SC in next CH 3
  • Repeat from * all the way around (21 shells {3 DC in same SC space} total)
  • Join with SL ST to top of first CH 3

Adult: Round 9, Newborn – Round 8, Preemie – Round 7 (chain round)

  • CH 1
  • SC on the top of the middle DC of the 3 DC's from the previous round
  • *CH 3
  • SC on top of the middle DC of the 3 DC's from the previous round
  • Repeat from * all the way around
  • End with a CH 3 and SL ST to the beginning CH 1
For an adult – Repeat Rounds 8 and 9 five times to make a total of 16 rows, ending with a shell round (round 9).

In other words, it looks like this:

  • Round 10: Shell Round
  • Round 11: Chain Round
  • Round 12: Shell Round
  • Round 13: Chain Round
  • Round 14: Shell Round
  • Round 15: Chain Round
  • Round 16: Shell Round

The Sides for Preemie and Newborn Sizes

I have not worked the hat for preemie and newborn sizes, so I'm honestly not sure how many rows of this particular stitch you'll need. But, using my Hat Measurements for Crochet and Knit post, you just keep crocheting until you've reached the correct length for those sizes of heads.

  • Preemie – 5 to 5.5 inches long (or shorter if it's a very small baby, but then it can be rolled up if it's too long)
  • Newborn 5.5 to 6 inches long

  1. I have been trying to make this beanie for my newborn granddaughter and am a bit confused. You mention working into a “space”, but I think you might mean “stitch”?
Also, in the first round for the sides of the beanie, you say to work a standing sc in the space where you just worked a sc. The previous round has no sc stitches in it. Can you help to clarify these things for me?

    Thanks so much, Ann
