Free crochet bumblebee sun hat pattern for you in all sizes, from newborn to adult

This summer I wanted to darn my babies in sun hats inspired by bugs, since they are all boys and love to play outside in the dirt and find bugs! Here is a free pattern for one of them – a bumblebee and it comes in all sizes, from newborn to adult!

Abbreviations

  • CH = chain
  • DC = double crochet
  • SL ST = slip stitch
  • BLO = back loop only
  • SC = single crochet

Color Pattern

I don't like the way that color changes look when using the double crochet stitch looks – they appear more ragged and are nice clean edges. So, I like to start and end each new color by doing front or back loop only and that really cleans up the look. Here's the color pattern I used for the bumblebee hat.

  • Yellow
  • Yellow
  • Black, BLO
  • Yellow, BLO
  • Yellow
  • Black, BLO

Materials Needed

  • Cotton worsted weight yarn, I used Sugar'n Cream in Yellow and Black
  • Hook (unless otherwise stated for the face pieces): H, 5.0 mm
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle to sew on pieces and sew in tails

The Sun Hat Brim

For this free crochet bumblebee sun hat pattern, I worked the whole brim in yellow, finishing in black for the edge. This pattern is the same for all the sizes, except for the teen and adult, you'll need to add an extra 2-3 rounds. This does make a slightly ruffled brim. If you'd rather it be more straight, then work less increasing stitches in the second round and and so on.

Round 1 (remove this round for Newborns and Babies up to 1 year, start at round 2 instead)

  • CH 2
  • 1 DC in each space all the way around, BLO
  • SL ST to top of beginning CH 2

Round 2

  • CH 2, DC in same space
  • DC in each of the next 3 spaces
  • *2 DC in same space
  • 1 DC in each of the next 3 spaces
  • Repeat from * all the way around
  • SL ST to top of beginning CH 2

Round 3

  • CH 2, DC in same space (or if using a new color, SL ST, CH 2)
  • DC in each of the next 2 spaces
  • *2 DC in same space
  • 1 DC in each of the next 2 spaces
  • Repeat from * all the way around
  • SL ST to top of beginning CH 2

Round 4

Repeat round 2

Rounds 5-6

For Teen and Adult hats, add an extra 1-2 rounds, depending on your preference, but decrease down to just 1 DC increase every other stitch – so, 2 DC in same same, 1 DC in next space, 2 DC in next space…and so on.

Finishing Round

I ended with black and did a 1 round of SC, 1 in each stitch around.
