DIY Natural Hair Refresh Spray

Here is a very simple recipe and natural curly hair refresh spray recipe that not only smooths and moisturizes the hair, but also smells divine with the addition of essential oils! It's also helps to tame frizz and helps those with wavy, curly and kinky hair to go longer in between washings.

Homemade No Frizz Hair Spray - All Natural and Easy!

I've written A LOT about my hair here on the blog, and for those of you with curly hair, you'll understand my fervor for taming the lion mane. It's a love-hate relationship until you find that perfect hair care routine that makes your curls bouncy, frizz-free and beautiful! It has taken me half a lifetime to figure some things out, and I've chronicled them all here for you.  See my Curly Hair page hub here.

Do You Use a Sulfate-Free Shampoo?

So, now that I've been washing my hair with sulfate-free shampoos, I only have to wash it every 4-7 days or so because my scalp isn't over producing oil. It's awesome! You gotta try switching to natural, no-poo shampoo sometime if you haven't already.

It doesn't strip your hair and scalp of the oils it needs to stay healthy and protected, unlike shampoos that contain detergents like sodium laureth sulfate (SLS).

Since I'm only washing it a couple of times a week, I need a spray to freshen up my hair and get rid of bed head frizz, but of course, I wanted something natural and cheaper than natural products in the store (can we say, break the bank? $$). Here's what I came up with! I smell the oils in my hair all day long, sometimes for two days! That alone makes me happy, but taking the frizz away does, too.

A DIY natural curly hair refresh spray with aloe vera to help smooth frizz and moisturize dry hair.  It also help you refresh your curls and go longer in between washes. Also works well as a detangling spray.

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in the bottle and give it a gentle swish to combine.

To refresh curls and waves, spray on dry hair, smooth over the curls, and scrunch.

To detangle, start with wet hair. Spray the refresh spray on and gently comb while the hair is wet.

To smooth frizzy or dry hair, spray a few squirts on dry hair and smooth over the hair with your hands, or brush in if you have straight hair.

Essential Oils for Healthy, Shiny Hair

Combine all in your 4-oz. bottle and spray as much on as you'd like! If you need even more frizz control, just increase the aloe vera to water ratio, or use only aloe vera. You could also add a teaspoon or two of your favorite silicone-free conditioner to add more moisture as well. That's it!

My favorite essential oils are from Young Living. They smell DIVINE and are the purest and most potent I've ever used (and I've used a TON of different brands). SaveSave SaveSave

  1. I noticed that you dance ballet in your “about myself” paragraph. I was wondering if you had an effective way to put your hair up and get rid of flyaways… I have relied on hairspray for many years, and although I probably only have 6 months left to dance at my studio (I’m a homeschooled Senior in Highschool, so college will end my dancing), I was wondering about some effective alternatives to Conventional hairspray.

    1. Hi Ashley! Yes, so what I do is use curly girl friendly gels to slick my hair back for dance performances. I wet my hair, apply the gel, and slick back. Aussie creates a cheap one called Instant Freeze Gel that’s safe for curly haired girls.

  2. Does the DIY spray need to be refrigerated like the aloe vera? Or just the aloe vera since it has no other ingredients in it?

    1. Hi Marci! I’ve never refrigerated mine, but I also didn’t test it for mold, so I can’t say for sure that it doesn’t grow mold. I don’t think it does since there are essential oils in it that help to keep mildew and mold away.

  3. I am a senior (67) and have had a lifetime of bad hair days. Now that my hair is white (not silver) I have to use a blue shampoo every wash to keep it from turning yellow. The texture of my wavy hair has gotten courser over the years. How do I take care of white course hair without all the frizz.

    Thanks,
    Cindy

  4. Hello I like this page great stuff. I was wondering if you have any more ideas for curly hair cuts. I was wanting something new.

  5. My aloe and water hair spray separates and no amount of shaking will
combine them. I have white foam floating around inside spray bottle.
    HELP!
