Healthy Homemade Gummy Candy – Real, No Added Sugar

Making your own gummy candy at home is so easy, you'll probably wonder why you've never tried it before! This recipe is extra healthy with the added antioxidant power of Ningxia Red, healing properties of grass-fed gelatin, and the nutrients from raw honey. Not a single dye, artificial coloring or weird ingredient in sight, either.

EASY Healthy Homemade Gummy Candy - Real, No Added Sugar, and with Ningxia Red!

It is so hard to avoid candy this time of year, with Halloween just six days away and all the winter holidays coming up! I feel like I'm playing a game of mommy whack-a-mole – neon colored candy! WHACK! Juice everywhere! WHACK! Gooey candy corn. WHACK! Sometimes I think us mamas need Ninja lessons.

So, my family's solution to the Halloween crazies is we still let our kids enjoy Trick-or-Treating, because we enjoyed the tradition so much ourselves growing up. Then, our kids (three boys, ages 6, 4, and 2) get to eat some of their candy they collect, then the rest is homemade or store-bought natural candy. And this recipe delivers! It is SO easy, you'll wonder why I even have a whole post about it. My children (and maybe their mama and daddy) love it!

Now, please know, this is still a dessert – something to be enjoyed in moderation. It is full of antioxidants, but there is still quite a bit of sugar. Eat it like a dessert, but eat them without worry!

So, what the heck is Ningxia Red?

Ningxia Red (pronounced “neen-sha”) is an amazing antioxidant supplement juice I buy through my account from Young Living (find out more about that here). We drink it on a daily basis, like a vitamin, because it is jammed-packed with nutrients! It combines the extraordinary wolfberry superfruit (that's grown in Ningxia, China, thus the name) with pure Orange, Yuzu, Lemon, and Tangerine essential oils along with blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices to deliver a whole body nutrient infusion. I find that when we drink it daily or regularly, we stay healthy and well, with our bodies functioning properly as they should! Let's take a look at some of it's benefits:

  • Sustain energy with the combination of select wolfberries and superfruits. Contains ingredients which are involved in many antioxidant processes and may help prevent against oxidative stress.
  • Delivers citrus essential oils containing d-limonene (I highly suggesting Googling that!), a powerful component in citrus oils.
  • Powerful formula includes wolfberry which is touted for its health benefits.

Health Benefits of Grass-Fed Gelatin

Gelatin is an amazing thing of nature, taken from the bones of cows, it helps to coat the intestinal lining, which promotes whole body wellness by preventing leaky gut. More specifically, it benefits the digestive system, hair and nail growth, and can tighten and firm skin! I put a tablespoon or so in my herbal tea at night and wow! My nails grow so strong and it helps with my eczema. It's also loaded with protein! This does NOT apply to the traditional gelatins found in grocery stores, which are made from the bones of very unhealthy cows that do not deliver the same nutrients. I buy this one – Great Lakes Grass-Fed Gelatin.

Young Living Citrus Essential OilsHealth Benefits of Citrus Essential Oils

Ningxia Red contains five citrus oils! When you ingest high-quality essential oils such as Young Living (many in the stores cannot be trusted), you can experience amazing health benefits. Citrus oils are very high in antioxidants, which help to fight free radicals. We are bombarded by free radicals in our day through processed foods, chemicals in beauty and hair products, household cleaners, carpet, paint…the list goes on and on. So, it is VERY important to support the antioxidant process in our bodies as we'd have to live in caves to prevent all the free radicals we face.

Avoid Artificial Dyes and Flavors

AVOID at all costs, seriously! I highly suggest having them in very small amounts – the colors like red-40, have been directly linked to neurotoxicity and negatively affect the behavior of children and very negatively affect the rest of their developing bodies (source). And sadly, these abound in the most popular gummies found on shelves today. Just because they are fat-free doesn't not make them healthy (in fact, good fats are actually good for you!). Ones dyed with fruit and veggies are much, much better. Natural flavors doesn't mean it's safe either – all it means is it's naturally derived but still chemically converted into something unnatural and in some cases, not safe.

Homemade Healthy Gummy Candy - in fun shapes for kids!

Make them FUN with super cute molds like this one that I bought – it comes as a set of six and includes insects, flowers, dinosaurs, robots and more. They are super flexible so the candies come out very easily.
