The Dromma Bed – Natural, Eco-Friendly, Memory Foam Mattress

Finding a good quality, natural and affordable mattress is very hard these days. Most mattresses on the market contain very toxic chemicals like flame retardants that off-gass and can really affect our health. It’s important to have a mattress that is both safe and comfortable, since we spend 8 hours a night every single night sleeping right on top of it!

The Dromma Bed - My Favorite Natural, Eco-Friendly Comfy Mattress

Here I am lounging on this SUPER comfy bed at 9 months pregnant – can you tell? The bear hides my belly nicely.

We’ve had the same mattress for 8 years, and let’s just say, it was in bad shape. I’ve been pregnant since January (39 weeks now!) and have been miserable at night since about the sixth month mark. I get horrible round ligament cramps in my lower belly and I’d wake up with a really stiff back. My husband has trouble with an old shoulder injury and often can’t fall asleep at night. Sounds like we are getting old, doesn’t it?! Our chiropractor has helped a lot, but I knew our mattress was a big part of the problem.

So I was really excited when Dromma Bed contacted me to see if I’d try out one of their eco-friendly, memory foam mattresses!

Medium Soft or Medium Firm?

According to Dromma Bed, Medium soft is ideal for side and stomach sleepers, and the Medium Firm is ideal for back sleepers, sprawlers, and bed hogs.

What Kind of Bed Frame Do You Need?

And all you need for this bed is either a platform bed frame, a bed with slats, the floor, or even a bed with a box spring works, too. So there are a lot of options that will hopefully work with the existing bed you already have (or in my case, you’re tired of your bed and wanted to get a new one!). Here’s where I got my headboard (just under $200!!) and here’s where I got the platform bed with slats. The slats are flexible so it gives even more cushion and support and there is 13″ of clearing under the bed. I have all our clothes for the next season stored under there, freeing up space in our master closet – yay!!

So What Do We Think?

I couldn’t wait to go to sleep the day we got our new bed! I’ve been so uncomfortable at night for about three months, so it was a big deal to actually look forward to going to sleep!

The first thing I noticed right away as soon as we opened the mattress is that there was NO smell at all, not even a little! And Kevin says I have a dog nose – I can smell EVERYTHING! I thought for sure there’d be a little smell, and if there is, my dog nose didn’t pick it up.

The only way I’ve survived at night on our old mattress was to wear a maternity support belt. For the most part, it keeps the cramps away. So get this – I was able to sleep ALL night long without my maternity support belt, without getting a single round ligament cramp! Wow! I was very pleasantly surprised. Plus, I no longer feel Kevin tossing and turning on his side. He also slept well and didn’t have any trouble with his shoulder.

I literally feel like I’m sleeping in a cloud – it just envelops and conforms to my body. It’s almost like getting cuddled! I couldn’t be happier with this bed and will proudly recommend it.

  1. You said it’s soy based foam. I guess I have to investigate that because most of the soy here in the US is GMO. So is this made from organic soy? And how would a soy based mattress fare for a person with a soy intolerance? Lots of things to investigate. I was in a car accident last October, that left me with a bad back and a bad shoulder. I don’t sleep well at all being I can’t lay on my back and when laying on either side my shoulder and hips hurt so I roll from right side to left side all night. Fun, right? Lol So I was so jelly when u said how well u both slept! Lol! But great for u! It’s nice to hear that u both are able to get a good night’s sleep!

    • Hi Robin! No, I don’t think it’s necessarily made from organic or non-GMO soy. That wasn’t important to me as GMO only matters if we are ingesting it into our bodies. A mattress made from materials that are genetically modified isn’t going to have toxic off-gassing fumes, but adding flame retardants and glue to it will. As for you being sensitive to soy, that’s a great question. I didn’t find anything on the website about that, so I just sent an email to the company to ask for you, and will get back to you once I hear from them. I’m so sorry you’re having so much pain and trouble sleeping. Have you tried a chiropractor before?

      • THANKS! And yes, I love chiropractors. I saw the chiropractor from Oct to March. It surely helped. The insurance co won’t pay for it anymore. That’s car insurance for ya. LOL Being that we switched to organic food and it costs so much more to eat now, I don’t have the extra funds for the chiropractor. The ins co said they are not paying for any more treatment. I laughed and said, “So I’m supposedly cured then? Tell that to my body.” hahaha But that is how they do. They don’t care if you are still in pain. They are about $$$$. I have permanent injuries. My doc is appealing and appealing. I am supposed to start physical therapy soon. I tried that before and it hurt too much. My body was not ready. The PENNS treatment helped a TON. But I only did the neck. They won’t let me do any more for the lower back. It would probably take away 80% of my pain.

        • I’m so sorry that it’s hard for you to afford the chiropractor – hopefully your body will do well with the physical therapy instead! My insurance doesn’t pay for chiropractic care, either. It’s ridiculous!

  2. Hi Sara! I’m very interested in this. We’ve needed a new mattress for a while, and we’re also getting ready to move, so this would probably be a good time to get one. I like the idea of an eco-friendly and non-toxic bed. With the free shipping and 200 days to try it out, it might be worth a try. One question I have about memory foam is whether it makes you feel hot. It seems to me like it would. What has your experience been? Does it ever make you uncomfortably warm?

    • Hey Sara, I did a little more research and found the answer to my question. So I went ahead and ordered one using your link. Can’t wait to try it out!

      • Great, Marge! Glad you got an answer to your question. Yes, they have a cooling layer. I’ve been super hot at night while pregnant with my old mattress, and since I’ve switched to this one, I’ve not been sweating at all!

  3. Carolyn A Lloyd says:

Does it make you hot? Does it make you sweat?

    • No, it doesn’t! I was surprised because I’ve been very hot this summer at night with being so pregnant. With the old mattress, I was waking up in a sweat. With this new one, I’ve not had any nighttime sweating and find I’m even pulling the covers up a little more. They do have a cooling, breathable layer.

  4. I’ve heard of eco-friendly mattresses but this is really the first time I’ve heard of one that’s Soy based. I wonder though if it will be okay for someone who has soy allergies?

  5. Hi Sara,
I just wanted to add something in regards to the mattress platform. Although, you could put this mattress on a box spring, it is better if you use a firm base such as a solid platform or slats that are close together. The springs will sink under your weight reducing the conturing effect of the mattress and as they get old your mattress will feel less and less comfortable. I know by experience! I do not own a Dromma bed but a few years ago I bought a natural latex mattress and thought I would save myself some money and just put it over my box spring. Big mistake. For a year I thought I had wasted my money because the mattress was just not as comfortable as I thought it would be (it was however much better than my previous one). It got worse and I thought the mattress was desintegrating or something. I checked and it was perfect. Then one day it clicked, wait, why do I have this on a box spring? I did some research and indeed I needed something firm. My husband immediately went to homedepot and got several 2x4s and cut them so we could have slats that are close together. It was like I had bought a new mattress!!!! Soooooo comfortable. So, I know the website says box spring is ok but I recommend you give it a second thought and consider a firm base.

  6. Antonia Goodwin says:

    Love your family!

  7. So what kind of base do you need to put this on?

  8. So what kind of base is needed?

  9. Hey sara, Thanks a lot. Also, your bed looks really luxurious. If you have a recommendation for pillows, I’d be willing to listen to that as well. BTW cute kids 🙂

  10. Janna @Mattressify says:

I liked your blog a lot. I wish I had read it a month ago. I was looking for a mattress for my new home, after i recently shifted to Austin. Everybody stressed I should get a latex mattress but I really liked memory foam. I’m very glad I got memory foam mattresses. It is much more relaxing to my back, and there is none of the common complaints they gave me about the heating or the smell. I mean, any mattress you buy is going to have a funky bleachish smell. Mine’s went away by the second night. My brother’s latex mattress, however, smells like cat piss haha. Mine’s a Serta. Is there a brand you recommend?

  11. Rony Sharma says:
