The Windows are Amazing!
One of the first things Americans notice when in Germany and in other parts of Europe is the windows. German windows are often made of uPVC, aluminum, or wood frames, while American windows are frequently made of vinyl, aluminum, or wood. They typically open inward, while American windows usually slide up and down. Lastly, they are often larger than American windows, which can provide more natural light and better ventilation.
Differences in Energy Efficiency
One of the main advantages of German windows is that they are often more energy-efficient and durable than American windows. This is due in part to the use of higher-quality materials like uPVC, which provides better insulation and helps reduce energy bills. Additionally, German windows are often triple-glazed, which offers excellent sound insulation and can further improve energy efficiency. However, German windows can be more expensive than American windows due to the higher quality materials and increased level of craftsmanship required.
Charming Features – Cobblestones and Wood Paneling
We love how our driveway is made of cobblestones. Cobblestones are still very common all throughout Germany, especially in pedestrian-friendly areas of towns and cities. They are so charming and cozy; however, they are difficult for those who have any physical handicaps or have trouble walking, like the elderly.
Radiant Floor Heating
We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the house we chose to rent has radiant floor heating. It is so nice and cozy to wake up in the morning and put your feet on a warm floor. It turns out that radiant floor heating is more common in Germany than in the USA. This is due in part to the fact that Germany has a colder climate than many parts of the USA, and radiant floor heating can be an effective way to keep homes warm in the winter. Additionally, many German homes are built with a focus on energy efficiency, and radiant floor heating can be an efficient way to heat a home.
It’s More Energy Efficient
Radiant floor heating works by heating the floor directly, which then radiates heat throughout the room. This is different from forced-air heating, which blows hot air through ducts to heat a space. It can be more energy-efficient than forced-air heating because it doesn’t lose heat through ducts or require as much energy to maintain a consistent temperature. Additionally, because the heat is radiated from the floor, it can feel more comfortable and evenly distributed than forced-air heat. We like how we no longer have hot air blowing around the house.
A Hiking Trail Out of Our Backyard
One thing we REALLY love about our German home is the location. We chose to live right near the Alps so we could easily access hiking trails and go skiing. We can even hike right out of our backyard! Now, this isn’t a common feature in German homes, as you might’ve already guessed. However, what is common in Germany are the public walking and biking trails that do go right through farmland. In fact, having the right to access land is a right protected by German law! Walking, hiking, and biking trails are everywhere, and we just LOVE that about Germany. It’s very common to see people out all throughout the year, walking and biking on the trails.
