Abbreviations

  • CH = chain
  • SC = single crochet
  • FBHDC = front post half double crochet
  • BPHDC = back post half double crochet
  • SP = space
  • SK = skip

Materials Needed

  • Hook: M 13, 9 mm
  • 1 skein Loops and Threads Cozy Wool Yarn in Fleece or another chunky/super bulky yarn. I got mine at Michael's. It's 50% wool, 50% acrylic.

Notes

  • The CH 1's do not count as the first SC, so you work each row's first SC in the same SP as the CH 1.
  • After each FPHDC and BPHDC is worked, skip the space immediately after it, it's also the same space as the post, to work the next SC.
  • For a tutorial of front post and back post crocheting, click here to see mine. It is for double crochet, and this pattern uses half double crochet, but it works almost exactly the same.

Pattern

CH 14

Row 1

  • In the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 SC.
  • Work 1 SC in each CH across.

Row 2

  • CH 1
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • FPHDC on each of next 2 SC's
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • FPSC on each of next 2 SC's
  • 1 SC in each of the last 3 sp's.

Row 3

  • CH 1
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • BPHDC on each of next 2 posts
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • BPHDC on each of next 2 posts
  • Work 1 SC in each of last 3 sp's

Row 4

  • CH 1
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • FPHDC on each of next 2 posts
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • FPHDC on each of next 2 posts
  • Work 1 SC in each of last 3 sp's

Row 5 – Crossing/Cable Row

  • CH 1
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • BPHDC on 2nd post, then come back and do first
  • 1 SC in each of next 3 sp's
  • BPHDC on 2nd post, then come back and do first
  • 1 SC in each of last 3 sp's

Repeat rows 2-5 for the remainder of the scarf. Just note that Row 2, line 2 would read “FPHDC on each of next 2 posts” and not SC's. If you want your cables to be closer together, then eliminate row 4 and do a cabled row sooner, it will just be FPHDC instead.

I made 68 rows and used 1 skein, but really it could be 5 rows or so shorter, maybe even more. It really depends on your preference of how you will wear it!

Then, sew a toggle button about 10 rows up from the bottom to secure it together.
