Spring Fling Picot Trellis Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern
A free crochet pattern for a bright and colorful, open stitch scarf that's perfect for when the weather is cool and the buds are just starting to pop out.
I love infinity scarves – how they don't dangle all the way down to my waist and get in the way of picking up my kids, buckling them into car seats, wiping boogers off those chubby cute cheeks, you get the idea. It stays where it's supposed to, keeps my neck warm and totally dresses up a plain outfit!
This pattern uses the picot trellis stitch, which is basically just a bunch of chains so despite it looking somewhat complicated, it's really rather simple. What really makes this scarf pop is the yarn – variegated yarn is so fun to use because you get tons of color without having to sew in any tails, yippeeeeeee!

Abbreviations
- CH = chain
- SC = single crochet
- ST = stitch
- SL ST = slip stitch
- TR = treble crochet
Materials
- About 5 ounces of Worsted weight yarn/230 yards – I used Red Heart with Love in Fruit Punch
- Hook: J/6.0 mm (for tighter stitching, a smaller hook would work just fine. I wanted it to be stretchy and loose)
The Pattern
I wanted a wide, bulky scarf, so I chose to do 27 chains wide. If you want it to be more of standard width, I'd go with 22 or 17.
Row 1
- CH 27 (or any multiple of 5 STs, plus 2)
- SC in 2nd CH from hook
- *CH 5, skip 4 CH's, SC in next CH
- Repeat from * all the way across the row, turn
- You will have 5 loops
Row 2
- CH 6
- In the first CH-5 space, work a picot stitch {SC, Ch 3, SL ST back in the first CH, SC}
- *CH 5, Skip next SC, work another picot stitch in next CH-5 space
- Repeat from * all the way across
- CH 2, then TR in last SC, turn
- (5 picot stitches created)
Row 3
- CH 1, SC back into the TR
- *CH 5, skip the picot stitch, work a picot stitch in the next CH-5 space
- Repeat from * all the way across to last CH-5 space
- CH 5, skip the picot stitch from the row below
- SC in last CH space (which is the previous CH 6 from row 2), turn
- (4 picot stitches created)
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until it's long enough for you. I made it very long for a full scarf, and did 45 rows until all the yarn was used up. Then, whip stitch the ends together to create the infinity scarf, or leave it loose for a regular scarf!
The colors of this yarn are so cheerful and bright! What would you make with it? A hat? A girl's dress? A swimsuit cover up? Hmmm…
And another shot of my new scarf – I've gotten so many compliments on it and it's been perfect to wear on days when it's still cool, but I'd rather not deal with a jacket.
Hope you enjoy making this as much as I did! Merry crocheting!
