Tips for Cleaning the Kids’ Bedrooms

Be Realistic, They’re Just Kids!

My kids are all now old enough to clean their own bedrooms. We do it most every week, but there are weeks where we don’t have the time and we let it go. Their rooms are NOT always clean, and that’s okay. It’s normal life. It will sometimes drive me crazy if their rooms are super dirty, so that’s when it’s a good time to do a 5-minute Room Rescue. Do that a few days in a row, and the room will look a lot better!

Be realistic, they’re just kids! Use this time as an opportunity to partner WITH them to teach them how to organize, declutter and clean. Skills they will need as adults! Kids enjoy cleaning so much more when they feel one of their parents is partnering with them (it doesn’t have to be mom!).

How We Do it In Our Family

Our youngest daughter, Ella, is 6 and she still needs either me or my husband to help her clean up her toys and clean her room. And sometimes our 10-year-old son, Griffin, needs help also. To make it more fun for them, we play their favorite music and set a timer so they know there’s an end in sight. It’s amazing how much music helps us all stay movtivated and cheerful!

If your kids are old enough to read, you could print out a zone cleaning list for them to be able to check off what they do. My kids also really like to work with timers, so another idea is to have them clean 30 minutes on Saturday, and 30 on Sunday. Or if they are busy on the weekends and there are some weekday afternoons or evenings that are better for them, do it then. Again, customize it to work for you and your children!

Kids can start cleaning as young as one year old! When they’re done playing with something, they love to help mommy or daddy help clean up. For them, it’s a fun game.
