Mini Mystery Crochet-A-Long (CAL) for Valentine’s Day

Welcome to the first ever crochet-a-long (CAL) at My Merry Messy Life! Have you been wanting to crochet a fun project for Valentine’s Day but need some motivation? Then this is perfect for you!

Crochet-a-long - crochet a project for Valentine's Day with other crochet enthusiasts!

What is a CAL?

What is a CAL? It stands for crochet-a-long. It is simply a time where I provide a pattern and a time frame and we all try to crochet the same project at the same time. You are all encouraged to post pictures of your progress on any of my social media channels. The fun part is that we form a community while working on the project together, and you can ask questions and look at each others’ pictures as we progress. At the end of the project, you will have the full free pattern that will stay on my blog for your disposal at anytime.

How Will This CAL work?

  • It’s just for fun, so even though there are guidelines, you’re not disqualified for any reason! Just participate as you’re able to – if you’re behind, that’s fine!
  • Post your progress on any of my social media channels – Facebook and Google Plus pages, Instagram, or Twitter. If you post on Instagram or Twitter, just make sure you use the hashtag, #CALMyMerryMessyLife so we can find your post and follow your progress!
  • It’s a mini mystery CAL which means it’s a small, quick project (mini) and a mystery because I’m not going to show you the whole project until we’re done!
  • This Friday night (1/17/14), I’ll post the first pattern. That will give you the weekend to complete it.
  • On Monday (1/20/14), I’ll post the second pattern.
  • On Friday (1/24/31), I’ll post the last pattern and we’ll try and finish up over the weekend.
  • Remember, there really aren’t any rules. It’s truly just for fun and for extra motivation!
  • This is suitable for a beginner.

To do Before Friday – Supplies Needed

This project is truly a stash buster, so you don’t need much yarn (yay!). Just gather your favorite coordinating colors (the project completed is not even 3 ounces, maybe just under). I chose 4 colors, but you could do more, as long as they all coordinate.

Then, you just need the typical needle to sew in loose strands and a pair of sharp scissors to cut the yarn. I have very detailed, step-by-step photos so you can follow along easily. If you still have trouble, then use the community in the comments below or on any of my social media channels to ask questions!

  1. What is the skill level? I’m a knitter but want to learn crochet. The terminology is like learning a new language!

    • Hi Cindy! You will need to know the basic stitches – double crochet, how to chain, single crochet and half double crochet. If you know those stitches, then it should be okay to follow along as I have very detailed, step-by-step photos. There are tons of beginner crochet videos on YouTube if you’ve got a chance to learn them by the weekend!

  2. Just wondering what size hook we may need. I don’t have all sizes and want to have the correct size before Friday!

  3. I am going out on Friday night to a party to celebrate my granddaughter’s passing of the bar. Yea, she’s a lawyer!!!
But because I don’t drive at night, my son will have to drive me there and back, so I won’t have any time to crochet that night. I’ll have to rush through it on Saturday and Sunday.

    • That’s fine, Fran! You’re not going to miss anything as the full pattern will be here on the blog at the end. And you can still participate in the fun – just post your progress even if you’re behind us. Congrats on your daughter passing the bar – that is exciting!

  4. Hi

I sent my information through the link so I can join the CAL but I didn’t get the the email with the link to click on. I’ve checked my junk email and spam filter and it is not there. Can you please send it again or add me directly? Thanks Christa

  5. Sara, This sounds like so much fun. Can you give us a hint though so we know if we should be coordinating reds and whites (for Valentines day) or something else?

    • Hi Gloria! Yes, Valentine’s colors. Did you see that the first pattern is already up? Here it is. You can see examples of colors on my Facebook page where many are sharing pictures of their progress.

      • um… it’s supposed to be a granny triangle, correct? so there should be 3 equal groupings of 3 DC. I may very well have read the pattern wrong – but it looks like there is 2 groups of 3DC and 1 group of 2DC. Is this the way the pattern should be or is it a typo? Sorry for the confusion. Thanx. Tami

  6. Done! 😀 Headed to Facebook to post pics. 🙂 Didn’t know what we hope to accomplish so I made 4 triangles, 2 of 2 colors. 😉 Can’t wait until Monday! <3

  7. I thought I had signed up for the email updates, but not sure … I’ll try again and if you see I’m on the list twice you can remove one.
I’ve made the first part, looking forward to the next part.

  8. I would love to have signed up for this, but I have only just found your blog, which by the way is fabulous. Also I have a lot crochet wise going on at the moment so not sure I could have participated as I should have. I will keep a watch on the progress though as it looks exciting. Lisa xxxx
