Crochet Sun Sun Hat Pattern for Boys

I've been having lots of fun designing hats for my boys. Girl hats are everywhere, with a myriad of patterns for butterflies and flowers, so I've enjoyed creating stuff that boys would love. And Gabriel loves this hat! When he's outside playing in the dirt and sand, he often comes to me with a little worm in his hand and talks to me all about it.

For more boy sun hats, see my posts on the Cape Cod Crab Hat, Gone Fishin' Goldfish Hat and the Ocean Star Hat.

Round 1: CH 2 (counts as first DC). Work 11 DC in ring (12 DC total). Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

Round 2 (increasing round): CH 2 (counts as first DC). Work a DC in the same stitch. Then work 2 DC in each DC space around (24 DC total).  Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

Round 3: CH 2. Work a DC in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each stitch around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST. (24 DC total)

Round 4: (increasing round) CH 2. Work a DC in the same stitch. *Work 1 DC in the next space. Work 2 DC in the next space.*  (so you're increasing every 1 stitch) Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST. (36 DC total).

Round 5 (increasing round): CH 2. Work a DC in the same stitch. *Work 1 DC in each of the next two spaces, then work 2 DC in the next space* (so you're increasing every 2 stitches) Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST. (48 DC total).

Crochet Sun Hat Brim Pattern

(this brim is designed to not be ruffly, but rather to stick straight out)

Round 1: CH 2. Work a DC in the same stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 3 stitches. *Work 2 DC in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 3 stitches.* Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

Round 2: CH 2. Work a DC in the same stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 2 stitches. *Work 2 DCs in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 2 stitches.* Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

Round 3: CH 2. Work a DC in the same stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 2 stitches. *Work 2 DCs in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each of the next 2 stitches.* Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

I tried working another round, but it made the brim ruffly, like a girls' hat, so I unraveled it. If your yarn is stiff, it might work just fine to add another round, where you work an increasing stitch (2 DC) every 1 stitch.

Merry Crocheting!
