Crochet Sun Hat – Brim Pattern

This brim pattern can be worked on any sun hat. It’s very easy and worked in the round. If your hat is not made with a HDC like mine, then you can change all the half double crochet stitches to the stitches that were worked in your hat (i.e., double crochet or single crochet).

Round 1: If attaching a new color for the brim, then attach with a SL ST and CH 1. In the next stitch, crochet 1 HDC. Work 1 HDC in each stitch around. (The picture does not reflect this round. It is optional.)
If using the same color, CH 1 and do the same as above – in the next stitch, work 1 HDC. Work 1 HDC in each stitch around.
For both – join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST, and CH 1.

Round 2: In the next stitch, work 2 HDC (in the same stitch). Then, *work 1 HDC in the next stitch. Work 2 HDC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * around & join with beginning CH 1 with a SL ST. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST, and CH 1.

Round 3: In the next stitch, work 1 HDC. In the next stitch, work 2 HDC (in the same stitch). Repeat this pattern all the way around – 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST, and CH 1.

Rounds 4 & 5: Work 1 HDC in each stitch around. in to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST, and fasten off.

thank you for sharing your patterns. It would be nice though if the pattern for the hat with the brim was in one place instead of thinking it was all in one place. very confusing.

Hi, I wanted to start with thanking you for your free patterns I have made a sunhat for 2 of my 5 children already lol:) However I have a question about the brim on the girls hat. If I wanted to make it longer would i just add a couple more rounds of the 1hdc in each or would I have to increase again? I’m new to crochet and taught myself with the help of books and The Art of Crochet tutorials by Teresa on youtube!! Any help would be greatly appreciated:D Thanks again Christy

    • Hi Christy! I’m happy you could use these patterns for your kiddos. I also learned from The Art of Crochet!! Good tutorials, aren’t they? So, for the brim, you do need to keep increasing each round or it will start to curl under. So, add your increasing stitch (2 HDCs in one stitch) 1 time less every round. For you, you’d want to not work rounds 4 & 5 as above, but rather as increasing rounds. Round 4 – 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC. Round 5 – 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC and so on. Your last round can be just 1 HDC in each stitch, or leave it with an increasing round, it doesn’t matter. I’d love to post your pictures when you’re done!
