Love Making Crochet Sun Hats for My Boys

Finally! After having lots of fun experimenting with super girly colors in my hats, scarves, headbands and flowers, I think I have finally got some estrogen out and want to get back to work on making things for my cute and dirty boys. Besides, they'll look back at this blog one day and think I didn't love them! Both of the boys need sun hats, so here's my pattern for Gabriel, who's 2 1/2.

Simple Hat – Double Crochet

This is a simple hat, worked only in double crochet. I don't normally like the look of double crochet in baby hats, but in this case, I did because it creates large spaces which will keep the baby's head cool. The color possibilities are endless! You can switch every row like I did, or switch 3/4 of the way down and crochet a different colored band around the middle. Whatever suits your fancy, really. This particular hat would look adorable on the beach with the colors of the ocean and the star appliqué.

Crochet Ocean Sun Hat with Star Fish - Free Pattern!

This free crochet ocean sun hat pattern will fit a toddler with 20 to 21 inch head (see my list of crochet head and hat measurements and how to calculate them). To make the hat larger, add more increasing rounds to the crown. To make it smaller, take away an increasing round. I have marked the increasing rounds below.

Crown of Hat

(Most crochet patterns tell you to CH 2 or even 3 to start a round of DC, but I find that makes a large, ugly gap, so I chain 1. If you would like to CH 2 or 3, it will not affect the hat size or pattern.)

CH 3, join with a SL ST to form a ring

Round 1: CH 1 (counts as first DC). Work 11 DC in ring (12 DC total). Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST.

Round 2 (increasing round): CH 1 (counts as first DC). Work a DC in the same stitch. Then work 2 DC in each DC space around (24 DC total).  Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST.

Round 3: CH 1. Work a DC in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each stitch around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST. (24 DC total)

Round 4: (increasing round) CH 1. Work a DC in the same stitch. *Work 1 DC in the next space. Work 2 DC in the next space.*  (so you're increasing every 1 stitch) Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST. (36 DC total).

Round 5 (increasing round): CH 1. Work a DC in the same stitch. *Work 1 DC in each of the next two spaces, then work 2 DC in the next space* (so you're increasing every 2 stitches) Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST. (48 DC total).

Round 6: (change colors where desired) CH 1. Work a DC in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each stitch around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST. (48 DC total).

Side of Hat

Rounds 7-17: CH 1. Work a DC in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in each stitch around (48 DC total). Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST. (48 DC total).

All Smiles for A Crochet Ocean Sun Hat
This is Gabe's smile when I say, “Smile!” So silly!

Brim

If you want there to be less wave than my hat, then, start with Round 2 or 3, where you add an increasing stitch less often.

Round 1 (increasing round): CH 1. 1 DC in same stitch. *Work 1 DC in the next stitch. Work 2 DC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST.

Round 2 (increasing round): CH 1. 1 DC in same stitch. *Work 1 DC in the next stitch. Work 1 DC in the next stitch.

Work 2 DC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST.

Round 3 (increasing round): CH 1. 1 DC in same stitch. *Work 1 in the next 3 stitches. Work 2 DC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * all the way around. Join to beginning CH 1 with a SL ST and fasten off!

Crochet Star Appliqué Pattern

I got the pattern for the star from Experience Imagination, but it's a thick Christmas ornament, so I made my own variation to make it an appliqué. It's very easy to make and an easy pattern to follow. I did not make it with two strands of yarn or whip stitch the two stars together. I just made one star with one strand of thread, and still liked the way it looked.

Continue adding increasing rounds if you want your hat brim to be longer. It will start to curl under if you add rounds that do not increase.

Merry Crocheting!
