How to Create a Daily Focus and Why It’s Awesome

As part of the Flylady system of home organization, cleaning and decluttering, I've incorporated the practice of a daily focus into my schedule and have been pleasantly surprised by how much it's been helping me as a mom of four! I'm less stressed, feel more calm, and am less scatterbrained!

How Having a Daily Focus has Helped Me

I don't know about you, but I'd never heard of the concept of having a daily focus before I heard of the Flylady system. It never occurred to me!

You Probably Already Have a Daily Focus and Don't Realize It!

In a way, most of us already have somewhat of a daily focus. The weekdays, the weekend, church day, holidays, family day – you get the idea. For my family, Fridays are family pizza nights, and Saturdays are family movie nights. So it's not too much of a stretch to give each day a more specific focus.

I Feel More Organized and Less Scatterbrained

For me, what I've found is that a daily focus has helped me to feel much more organized and less scatterbrained. I used to feel like everything had to be done as soon as I could get it done! This meant the to-do lists in my head were really long and they bounced around inside my head like a ping-pong game. It really added extra stress and anxiety for me! I'm sure you can relate.

One Example – I Do All of My Errands On One Day and It's SO Helpful!

Now when I have errands to run, I know that I do those on Tuesdays. This one detail has helped save me so much time! Instead of spreading errands throughout the week or doing them on the weekends when I'd rather be at home with my family, I do them all in one morning. This has saved on gas, wear and tear on my car, and saved me time. As an errand need pops up, I write it in my home control journal and relax knowing on Tuesday I'll take care of it and can focus on what's going on in the moment.

Scheduling doctors and dentist appointments I do on Mondays. Weekly menu and grocery list planning is on Mondays. Thursdays is for cleaning the main areas of the house.

The Flylady's Daily Focus

Here's what the Flylady, Marla Cilley, does as her daily focus for each week. In her book, Sink Reflections, she says you can, of course, change the focus and move this all around to suit your family schedule.

  • Sunday – Rest and relax day
  • Monday – Weekly Home Blessing Hour (one hour of cleaning the high traffic areas of the home)
  • Tuesday – Planning Day (or desk day – menu planning, grocery list planning, look ahead on the calendar, etc.)
  • Wednesday – Anti-Procrastination Day – do at least one thing you've been putting off, like scheduling a dentist appointment
  • Thursday – Errand day
  • Friday – Clean out car, purse, gym bags, sports bags, book bags, etc, and date night
  • Saturday – Family Day
How to Create a Daily Focus with the Flylady System and How it Helps

My Daily Focus

I switched my daily focus up a bit to suit my family's needs and schedule.

Planning Day is now on Monday

All of my kids are in school on Mondays, so it's easier for me to do my planning on Mondays. Plus, I just don't want to start my week with cleaning! LOL

Errand Day is Now on Tuesdays

I also moved errand day from Thursday to Tuesday, because on Mondays, I plan the menu and grocery store list from that weekly menu. Then I order groceries online through Kroger Clicklist (a lifesaver!!), and schedule them for pickup on Tuesday mornings.

My daughter, Ella, is home with me on Tuesdays and she loves to go places! So doing errand day when she's home also made sense for me.

Changed the Name of Anti Procrastination Day

I changed Anti Procrastination Day to be Get ‘Er Done day for me, because it sounded more pleasant for an unpleasant activity!

The rest I kept the same. So I hope you can see, this plan is totally customizable! You can have any focus for each day that you want. The point is to create a daily focus that works for you and your family.

Here's my daily focus and weekly plan:

  • Sunday – Rest and relax day
  • Monday – Planning Day (or desk day – menu planning, grocery list planning, look ahead on the calendar, etc.)
  • Tuesday – Errand day
  • Wednesday – Anti-Procrastination Day – do at least one thing you've been putting off, like scheduling a dentist appointment
  • Thursday – Weekly Home Blessing Hour (one hour of cleaning the high traffic areas of the home)
  • Friday – Clean out car, purse, gym bags, sports bags, book bags, etc, and date night
  • Saturday – Family Day
