Oil pulling is an ancient, ayurvedic practice to remove toxins from the body, but with today’s busy lifestyles, it can be hard to squeeze into your daily routine. So I make it as easy as possible with the homemade coconut chews that I can just pull out of the fridge and pop in my mouth!
Oil pulling seems to be a popular buzzword in the health world recently. After some investigation about what it is and why it’s beneficial, I was on board! But with most new healthy habits that I attempt to adopt, they tend to fall to the wayside after a while. As a busy stay at home mom, I’ve come to realize that for any habit to stick, I have to make it as easy as possible for myself otherwise it’s just not going to happen. Do you know what I’m saying mommas? Oil pulling is not difficult but I needed to find an no-excuse method.
Oil pulling is basically swishing about a half tablespoon of oil in your mouth for a certain 5-10 minutes and then spitting it out. The idea is that the oil actually pulls toxins from your body to improve your overall health and oral health by removing bacteria from your mouth. This article on this website goes more in-depth into the history and science behind oil pulling. I’d use about two teaspoons of coconut oil and swish for as long as I could possibly stand it, usually about 5-10 minutes. It takes some time to work up to 20 minutes and I’m not quite there yet. Plus, how can a mom of a toddler not speak for 20 minutes at a time? “Get off the table!” “Don’t eat that!” ” Don’t let the dog lick you in the mouth!” I need to speak. A lot. You get the idea.
To kick your oil pulling up a notch, you can add certain essential oils to help improve oral health even more than just oil alone. Clove essential oil is great for the mouth and can help ease oral/tooth pain (analgesic effect), strengthen and rebuild gum tissue and rid your mouth of bacteria.
To make oil pulling even easier, I’ve started using these homemade chews. They are basically solidified chunks of coconut oil that I can just pop in my mouth. This makes it a much faster process than dipping a spoon into the coconut oil, adding my clove essential oil, and then oil pulling. And it couldn’t be easier to throw together!
Homemade Coconut Oil Chews for Oil Pulling Recipe
- 1 cup of high quality coconut oil
- 40-60 drops of Young Living clove essential 0il for adding cleansing properties (other oils that work well are Thieves, Tea Tree, peppermint, lemon, orange, and more!) (where to buy Young Living essential oils)
Place the mold in the fridge until the oil has hardened then remove the chews and place them in an airtight container in your fridge.
I recently included this cute silicone mold in my Favorite Kitchen Tools post and it makes this process so easy! The silicone mold is flexible and allows you to easily remove the chews once hardened. In a pinch you could put the oil mixture into a glass baking dish and then cut into small squares once hardened.
How to Use the Chews
To oil pull using the handy chews I take a bite out of one of the heart shaped chews. I can only handle about a teaspoon or two at a time so I can get about 3 uses out of each heart shape. It will vary depending on your mold and how much oil you want to use at once (up to 1 tablespoon is recommended), but it’s not an exact science so just use what feels right. If you prefer, you could cut the hearts into 2-3 pieces for storage so you don’t have to bite into the chew.
Allow the oil to melt for a second in your mouth. Then slowly chew on the oil, melting it completely. It’s a really strange feeling at first! Next swish it around gently for 5-20 minutes. You don’t have to vigorously swish, just a gently swishing motion around the mouth/through the teeth is perfect. Then spit it out. Wellness Mama says not to spit it down the drain, but I like to do this in the shower so that’s where it usually ends up. Do NOT swallow the oil! It’s (hopefully) full of toxins from your body and mouth. After oil pulling, rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water and brush your teeth.
From my experience, I’ve noticed that my teeth feel really clean and seem whiter! I also find that I’m noticing less plaque buildup on me teeth.
I hope you give this a try! Will having the oil pulling chews on-hand make this easy for you? Enjoy!
