My Nighttime Curly Hair Routine

All my tricks for how to care for your curls even while you're sleeping so you can wake up with no frizz or tangles, soft and ready to go!

Must-Have Curly Girl Guide Book

I have learned so much from this book – the Curly Girl: The Handbook by Lorraine Massey. It has so many DIY recipes and important things to know about curly hair. Get this book if you haven't already! So, some of these tips are from what I learned in that book and from my DEVA stylists (stylists who are professional trained to cut curly hair).

Sleep with a Silk Bonnet

Yup, you gotta do it! As silly as it looks or feels, this is the best way to keep your hair from getting frizzy and tangled while you sleep. This is the one that I use.

I like silk more than satin because it breathes. If you get hot while you sleep, you will probably be throwing your satin bonnet out of the window!

Or Sleep with a T-Shirt Turban

A t-shirt turban can be very effective when your hair is wet and you wash and style your hair at night. Just plop your hair on top of your head with a t-shirt turban like this one and when you wake up, you'll have defined, mostly dry, bouncy curls with no frizz!

Silk or Satin Pillow Case

A silky smooth pillow case really helps to prevent breakage and frizz if you're not wearing the bonnet. It isn't necessary if you do wear a bonnet or turban. I prefer silk since it's natural and breathable – here's the case that I like!

  1. I’m turning 54 next month. When I was 40 I asked my beautician to give me a perm, as she washed my hair she said your hair is already curly when’s the last time you had a perm? I told her 4 years ago when I got married. She said well you’ve got curly hair all on your own now. so at 40 years old I struggled on how to take care of and style my curly hair. I never really figured it out though I loved it. At 50 years old I got a reverse angle Bob short haircut. It was so short in the back there was no curl anymore and styling was so simple.
Enter the pandemic and I went 6 months without a haircut. I found my curls again!! So now I’m back trying to figure out how to get the most out of them. I’ve been doing the curly girl method for a couple weeks. I bought a silk bonnet but it falls right off my head. I don’t understand how anyone goes days without washing their hair. My hair is a big knotted mess at the end of the day. The front and sides of my hair are more wavy and the back is curly and I struggle on how to style the two different curls. My wonderful beautician told me to just use a curling iron on the hair that’s not as curly. So I bought a 5 in 1 curling iron so I could achieve different size curls when I wanted. but yesterday I spent about 40 minutes trying to curl the hair that wasn’t as curly. I have back and neck issues and that was a real struggle to spend that long on my hair. At night I end up brushing my hair because it is tangled and nasty. What am I doing wrong please help!!

    1. Hi Michelle! Okay, I would go completely with the Curly Girl Method – I have a full post on how to get started with the method here. Since your hair gets matted and knotted by the end of the day, I’d bet you need to start regularly deep conditioning (read about that here) and you might even need a protein treatment. I spend about 10 minutes styling my curls and then let them air dry, so you definitely do not have to spend an hour fixing your hair! Your stylist just doesn’t know much about curly hair – I do suggest finding one who does, like a DEVA stylist. They make a world of difference! Best of luck, I love that you’re embracing your natural curls!
