DIY Natural Scalp Scrub
A tingly and soothing DIY natural scalp scrub with peppermint and rosemary essential oils, coconut oil and sugar. It will exfoliate and thoroughly clean your scalp and help soothe any skin irritation.
Benefits of Scalp Massage
Use this natural scalp scrub to do your own scalp massages. Scalp massages help to loosen dead skin cells and dirt, and promote circulation to the scalp. The increased circulation helps to heal your scalp, keep it healthy and clean, and promote hair growth.
Learn About the Ingredients in this Natural Scalp Scrub
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil heals and moisturizes the skin. Eastern cultures have been using coconut oil for thousands of years, and for good reason!
It contains a magical ingredient I’ve written about before called lauric acid, a medium chain saturated fatty acid (MCFA) that is converted in the body into a compound called monolaurin, an antiviral and antibacterial that destroys a wide variety of disease-causing organisms. So, coconut oil does more than sesame or olive oils by killing germs while, at the same time, drawing them out of the body.
Other Oils to Use Instead of Coconut Oil
Coconut oil makes the thickest consistency for this scrub, but it can be too heavy and greasy if you tend to have an oily scalp. Also, if you've got very fine hair, it could be hard to remove and might really weigh it down. Here are some other oils that are great for the hair and scalp:
- Castor Oil (helps to grow the hair)
- Jojoba Oil (the closest to skin sebum)
- Sweet Almond Oil (soothing and lighter oil)
- Olive Oil (all-around good oil for hair and skin)
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is a homeopathic remedy for SO many skin and health issues! I have written several articles on it: Apple Cider Vinegar and All of Its Wonders, DIY Hair Clarifying Shampoo, DIY Facial Toner, and DIY Anti-Itch Rub.
Human skin is acidic in nature, so when it becomes more alkaline, it is prone to problems like acne and skin rashes. Apple cider vinegar is good for maintaining the pH balance of the skin because it is acidic. It is an effective antiseptic with antibacterial properties and keeps away pathogens like bacteria from the skin.
It's also wonderful to use as a light and natural hair conditioning and clarifying rinse – see my tutorial here.
