Get Your Home in Shape with Flylady 31 Baby Steps

This next month I'm going to take you through the Flylady 31 Baby Steps to improve our lives as moms together! These steps are simple, easy and help you create one helpful habit a day for one month. These habits are the building blocks to having a home and life that is organized, runs smoothly, stays clean, and feels like the sanctuary you want your home to be.

What is the FlyLady System?

To put it very simply, the Flylady system it’s a framework to help you manage your home and life to reduce stress and chaos. It is a way of life! It helps you to be able to:

  • Clean your home systematically, consistently and easily.
  • Reduce mental clutter and stress by giving you a plan and a focus.
  • Declutter your home by creating a habit of decluttering and organizing.
  • Anchor your life with routines and healthy habits so you can be the homemaker and mother you truly want to be.

It’s all based on the book by Marla Cilley, Sink Reflections, which I highly recommend buying to get a complete, in-depth overview of the system. It was an easy and enjoyable read for me. I teared up quite a few times while reading it because she truly understands what it’s like to manage a home while being a mom. She speaks to our spirits, to our struggles, and offers easy and simple solutions to make our lives much better! She also has a website, FlyLady.net, if you’d like to check that out.

Your home did not get dirty in one day, and it will not get clean in a day, either. You have been living in clutter and chaos for many years; you are not going to get your home clean in a day. I do not want you to crash and burn. This is why I teach you to take Baby Steps. If you try to do this all at once, you are going to be mad at me, because this will be like every other “get-organized” method you have tried. I want you to take your time. As you establish one habit, you will very easily be able to add another one to your routines. – Marla Cilley

The Flylady 31 Baby Steps

Are you ready to make huge improvements to your life this next month? If you stick with this, by the end of this month you will have created daily habits that will make you feel better about yourself, your home and your family. I'm excited for us to link arms and do this together!

Consistency is QUEEN

CONSISTENCY is the basis of the Flylady system. So that is why we start her system with baby steps, and add a new one each day. If you're consistently cleaning your home, decluttering, and taking care of yourself, things won't devolve into chaos and stress!

Day 1 – Shine Your Sink!

Flylady 31 Baby Steps - Day 1 - Shine Your Sink!

I love this little step and it's so easy! Sometime today, shine your sink. I just put dish soap on a sponge (click here for my easy nontoxic liquid dish soap recipe) and scrub it down after I wash the dishes at night, but that's me! If it's really dirty, I use my Baking Soda Scrub to clean it. The point is at least once today, shine your sink. Why? Even if the rest of the kitchen is a mess, it's easy to clean just the sink. A clean, shiny sink greets you as if to say, “you've got this! You're worth it!” It also helps you to feel like you accomplished one thing that day.

  1. Love the 2 minutes! I’m not much of a visual cluttered. I put everything in drawers! Haha. So I cleaned the 2 drawers of my China cabinet. 2 minutes each drawer. Just doing this everyday will help me get rid of a lot of junk!

  2. After team driving with my husband and only being home 24 hours a week for 5yrs. Im finally home now with granddaughters… & the awful, chaotic, mess of a house. So very grateful to find your page. Im so overwhelmed and squirrel with a thousand other things i need to clean. I have true hope now to have a real organized & clean home to enjoy!

  3. I have taken to replacing most of the shoulds with coulds . Ex: I should do the dishes/I could do the dishes. Thanks to my French friends for their inspiration! (Other Europeans as well.)

  4. In addition to putting washcloths and dish towels into the laundry every day I also add pillowcases. Helps keep the sweat and whatever else emerges in the night off the face!

  5. My grandmother and all her friends always dressed in the morning. Down to a nice necklace. Our Mom as well. No slobby sweatpants!
